Astuvansalmi rock paintings are a prehistoric open-air rock-art site in South Savo, Finland, located on a granite cliff at the shore of the Saimaa lake system near the village of Ristiina. The panels are attributed to the Bronze Age and are among Finland’s best-known rock-painting localities.

The painted motifs appear in red pigment on a vertical rock face and include schematic human figures, boats and animals, concentrated within a short stretch of cliff. The panels are compact rather than spread across a wide area, so viewing typically focuses on a few main painted sections.

Scholars interpret the images as related to maritime and hunting lifeways of prehistoric communities; the paintings represent ritual or symbolic imagery rather than decorative art. The site has been recorded and studied by Finnish archaeologists since the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The rock face sits at the waterline of the Saimaa basin in eastern Finland, within the municipality historically known as Ristiina in South Savo. The nearest regional centre is Mikkeli.

• Access: Located on a rocky lakeshore and best approached on foot; the paintings are exposed on a near-vertical granite face rather than on a cave ceiling.
• Motifs: Painted in red ochre, the motifs include human figures, boats and animals typical of Scandinavian rock-art traditions.

The site is near the village of Ristiina in South Savo. From Mikkeli (~20 km), drive or take local transport towards Ristiina and follow signs to Astuvansalmi; parking and a short boat or waterfront approach are required. Local tourist offices can arrange guided boat trips.

• Bring binoculars and a good camera with a telephoto lens; the paintings can be high on rock faces and difficult to photograph from the shoreline.
• Wear rubber-soled shoes - approaches can be wet and slippery, especially near Lake Saimaa.
• Visit with a local guide who can read the symbols and explain the site's place in Finnish prehistoric ritual landscapes.
