About Asir National Park

Asir National Park is a protected area in the Asir region of southwestern Saudi Arabia that conserves mountainous highland landscapes and upland woodlands. It protects part of the Sarawat mountain range and higher-elevation ecosystems that contrast with the surrounding lowlands.

The park contains steep valleys, terraced slopes, and areas of native woodland that support local fauna and plant communities adapted to higher rainfall and cooler temperatures. Recreational use is limited compared with lowland parks; the area is valued for hiking, scenic drives, and nature observation rather than intensive tourism.

The protected area was created by national authorities to conserve biodiversity and traditional highland landscapes. Management aims to balance conservation of native habitats with the needs of local communities.

Geographically the park sits in the southwestern highlands near the regional city of Abha and the Asir administrative region, within the Sarawat mountain belt of Saudi Arabia.

Habitat: The park preserves highland and montane habitats including juniper and cloud forest pockets that are cooler and wetter than much of Saudi Arabia.

How to Get to Asir National Park

Asir National Park is accessible from Abha, the regional capital. Abha International Airport (AHB) serves domestic flights from Riyadh and Jeddah; from Abha the park areas are reached by road-expect drives of 30-90 minutes depending on which sector is visited. Regional buses and private taxis operate from Abha; hiring a driver familiar with mountain roads is recommended.
