Ascension Cathedral (Zenkov Cathedral) in Almaty is an Orthodox cathedral built in the early 20th century and located in Panfilov Park. It is recognised for its timber construction and distinctive colored exterior.
The cathedral’s wooden structure, multi-domed silhouette and painted exterior are prominent features; the interior contains traditional Orthodox iconography and liturgical furnishings. It is an active place of worship and a focal point in Panfilov Park.
Constructed between 1904 and 1907 under architect Andrei Zenkov, the cathedral is often cited for surviving the 1911 earthquake with limited damage. It has served as a religious centre through Tsarist, Soviet and post-Soviet periods, undergoing restorations at different times.
Located in central Almaty within Panfilov Park, the cathedral sits near other civic landmarks and is accessible from the city centre.
