Asam Church (Asamkirche), officially St. Johann Nepomuk, is an 18th-century Baroque-Rococo church on Sendlinger Straße in Munich, built and decorated by the Asam brothers. It was completed in the mid-18th century and is noted for its rich interior decoration.
The narrow single-nave interior is densely decorated with stucco, gilding and a large ceiling fresco, offering a concentrated example of southern German Rococo. Decorative elements and illusionistic painting by Cosmas Damian Asam are principal draws.
Constructed between 1733 and 1746 as a private chapel by the Asam brothers, the church later opened to the public and has been preserved as one of Munich’s important Baroque monuments. It has survived urban changes and remains a functioning church.
Placed on Sendlinger Straße in central Munich, the church is within walking distance of the city’s main shopping streets and central transport hubs.
- Origins: Built as a private chapel by the brothers Cosmas Damian and Egid Quirin Asam between 1733 and 1746, it is a compact example of Bavarian late Baroque interior decoration.

Tips for Visiting Asam Church #
- Enter from Sendlinger Straße and stand with your back to the street for the best first impression of the vertical gilded interior - most visitors walk straight in then look up too late.
- Go early (before 10:30) to avoid tour groups and catch the shafts of light that make the gilt really sing.
- Look for the subtle scratches and shiny wear on the south-side pews - regular Munich parishioners still use them during quick weekday masses, a human trace most guidebooks miss.
Best Time to Visit Asam Church #
Best visited outside the noon tourist surge; early morning or late afternoon light reveals details that rush hour crowds obscure.
