Artush Travel Guide
City City in Xinjiang, China
A predominantly Uyghur city on the western plains where bazaars, mosques and flatbread ovens anchor daily life. Visitors seek handwoven carpets, lamb kebabs at night markets and drives into nearby mountain and desert scenery.
Why Visit Artush? #
In western Xinjiang, Artush (Artux) draws visitors wanting a close look at Uyghur life and Silk Road continuity-bustling Sunday bazaars, mountain views and stalls selling dried fruits, nuts and handwoven textiles. Culinary specialties such as pilaf (polo), laghman noodles and lamb kebabs make the food a major reason to visit. Traditional music, mosque-centered communal life and local crafts offer cultural depth, while the city’s position on regional routes makes it a practical base for exploring nearby valleys and cultural sites.
Who's Artush For?
Artush (Artux) is a good spot for authentic Uyghur flavors - try lamb kebabs, hand-pulled noodles and flatbread at the central bazaar and roadside stalls. Expect hearty, cheap meals in the old market and family-run restaurants along Jiefang Road.
The surrounding Tien Shan foothills and irrigated valleys offer quiet country walks and simple day trips from Artush. Local rivers and orchards are pleasant for low-key outings, though marked trails and visitor facilities are basic compared with major Xinjiang parks.
Artush is a practical stop on overland routes through southern Xinjiang with budget guesthouses, local buses and a lively bazaar to explore. Facilities are modest but affordable; it’s useful for travellers heading between Kashgar and regional border towns.
Artush functions as an agricultural and trading hub for Kizilsu - cotton, fruit and cross-border commerce are important here. Small logistics firms and wholesale markets dominate; travel infrastructure supports regional business more than leisure tourism.

How to Get to Artush
Artush (Artux) doesn't have a major airport of its own; most visitors arrive via Kashgar (Kashi) Airport or by rail through Kashgar Railway Station. From Kashgar you can reach Artush by regional train, intercity coach or taxi - road journeys typically take around an hour to 90 minutes.
Kashgar (Kashi) Airport (KHG): Kashgar is the nearest major airport serving the Artush area. From Kashgar Airport there are official airport shuttle buses into Kashgar city (typically around CNY 25-40, 30-45 minutes) where you can catch a coach or taxi onward to Artush. Direct taxis or private transfers from the airport to Artush take about 1-1.5 hours; expect roughly CNY 150-300 for a point-to-point taxi or private car depending on negotiation and luggage.
Train: Artush is on the Southern Xinjiang rail corridor and is served by local stations on routes connecting Kashgar with Hotan and other regional cities. Kashgar Railway Station is the main regional hub for longer-distance services. Short regional trips (for example Artush-Kashgar) are relatively quick by train; longer journeys across Xinjiang to places like Urumqi are long-distance services that can take many hours to more than a day. Ticket prices depend on seat class and distance (short regional fares often start low, longer soft/ hard sleeper fares rise accordingly).
Bus: Regular intercity coaches run between Kashgar and Artush from the Kashgar long-distance bus terminal; these coaches typically take about 1-1.5 hours and cost around CNY 10-30. Within Artush and nearby towns, local minibuses and shared vans provide the most frequent, low-cost options; taxis fill gaps where scheduled public services are sparse.
How to Get Around Artush
Artush is best navigated by a mix of taxis and short intercity coaches; trains are useful for longer regional travel but services are less frequent. For exploring the town itself, walking and cycling work well - taxis and shared minivans fill in where public buses are limited.
- Taxi (CNY 10-300) - Taxis are the most convenient way to get around Artush and to reach nearby towns. Short in-town rides are inexpensive, while longer transfers (for example to/from Kashgar) are charged by distance and can be substantially higher. Always ask the driver to use the meter or agree a price before setting off; many drivers expect cash.
- Intercity bus / coach (CNY 10-30) - Intercity coaches link Artush with Kashgar and other regional centres from the long-distance bus terminals. Buses are cheap and frequent for short hops (CNY 10-30) and take around 1-1.5 hours to Kashgar depending on traffic. Coaches are the most economical choice if you aren't carrying a lot of luggage and can handle a fixed timetable.
- Regional train (Varies (short trips low; long-distance sleepers higher)) - Regional train services on the Southern Xinjiang corridor connect Artush with Kashgar, Hotan and further afield. Trains are comfortable for longer distances but schedules can be sparse; advance booking is recommended for overnight journeys. Classes range from hard seat to sleepers on long routes, with fares rising for higher classes and longer distances.
- Shared minivans / private coach (CNY 10-50) - Shared minivans and privately run coaches are common for short- to medium-distance travel in the region and can be faster than scheduled buses. They typically depart when full and are a good option for flexible travel between towns. Prices are similar to bus fares but can vary with demand.
- Bicycle (CNY 5-15 / hour) - Cycling is practical for short trips within town - streets are generally flat and a bicycle lets you cover more ground than walking. Rental availability varies; ask local guesthouses or shops. Use caution on busier roads and during hot summer afternoons.
- Walking - The centre of Artush is compact and easily explored on foot; walking is the best way to see local markets and neighbourhood streets. Sidewalk quality varies, so wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for stretches with little shade in summer.
