Arslantepe is an archaeological mound (tell) near Malatya in eastern Turkey that preserves a long sequence of settlement from the Chalcolithic through later periods. Excavations have revealed palace structures, fortifications and rich material culture that document early state formation in the Upper Euphrates region.

Excavated remains include monumental architecture, administrative areas and evidence of craft production and metallurgy spread over multiple occupation layers. The site is important for understanding urban development and centralized authority in the 4th to 2nd millennia BCE.

Arslantepe was first examined by modern archaeologists in the 20th century and has been the focus of systematic excavations that uncovered its complex stratigraphy and artifacts. Conservation and research continue to clarify the site’s chronology and regional connections.

The mound sits near the modern city of Malatya in Malatya Province, on the upper reaches of the Euphrates drainage in eastern Anatolia, within an agricultural plain framed by nearby hills.
