Harpoot Archaeological Site

Harpoot, often spelled Harput and located near modern Elazığ in eastern Turkey, is a historic hilltop settlement centered on a fortified ridge. The site is known for its castle, layered historic buildings, and its role as a regional center in successive empires.

The fortress dominates the ridge and the surrounding old town contains a mix of historic houses, mosques, and cemetery sites reflecting a long sequence of occupation. Harput served as a local administrative and military center at different times and retains visible medieval and later-period fabric despite later population shifts toward the modern city of Elazığ.

Archaeological and architectural evidence shows continuous habitation from antiquity through medieval and Ottoman periods, though many historic buildings have been altered or repurposed. The settlement’s hilltop position provides views across the surrounding plain and helped define its strategic importance.

Geographically it sits on a limestone ridge a short distance from the center of Elazığ in Elazığ Province, eastern Anatolia.

The historic site of Harput (Harpoot) is in the Elazığ area of eastern Turkey, on the hill above modern Elazığ city. The easiest way to reach Harput is to travel to Elazığ (by bus or via Elazığ Airport) and then take a short taxi or local dolmuş/minibus up to the Harput quarter and castle area from the city centre; the climb up from the town is a short drive or walk from Elazığ’s central area.

• Approach Harput via the Old Harput quarter beneath the fortress so you can experience the narrow historic streets, mosques and stone houses before climbing to the castle for the best viewpoint over Elazığ and the surrounding plain.
• Plan your visit for late afternoon light - the fortress sits on a hill and the low sun emphasizes the medieval stonework and gives expansive views across the city and distant plateaus that are at their best near sunset.
