Arpad, Syria

Archaeological Site Ancient Aramean city and archaeological ruin near Aleppo

Arpad near Aleppo is an archaeological tell with remains of an ancient fortified city. Historians and archaeologists visit for Iron Age ruins and regional historical study.

Arpad was an ancient city-state in northern Syria that served as the capital of a regional kingdom during the early 1st millennium BC. It is referenced in Assyrian sources as an important fortified city and political centre.

Archaeological remains have been associated with a large tell in Aleppo Governorate and inscriptions indicate the city was significant in regional diplomacy and warfare. In the 8th century BC Arpad resisted Assyrian expansion but was besieged and ultimately captured during Tiglath-Pileser III’s campaigns.

Following its conquest the city was incorporated into the Assyrian provincial system and later archaeological layers reflect successive occupations and rebuilding phases. The site has yielded fortification remains and other material evidence of its Iron Age prominence.

The ancient city lies in Aleppo Governorate in northern Syria, at a tell that occupies a strategic position on the regional plain and historically controlled local routes.

  • Identification and sources: Identified with the archaeological site Tell Rifaat, it was the capital of a regional Aramean kingdom and appears in Assyrian records.
  • Siege and fall: Suffered an extended siege and was captured by the Assyrian king Tiglath-Pileser III in the mid 8th century BC, an event recorded in Assyrian inscriptions.
