Arfak Mountains

The Arfak Mountains are a mountain range on the Vogelkop Peninsula in West Papua province of Indonesia known for high biodiversity and numerous endemic species. The range rises sharply from the surrounding lowlands to form a compact mountainous area with a variety of forest types.

Trails and small-scale lodges provide access for birdwatching, botanical surveys and trekking, with visitors focusing on endemic birds-of-paradise and montane flora. Elevational gradients produce distinct habitats from lowland forest to montane cloud forest.

The range has long been recognised by biologists for its endemism and remains a focus for field research and conservation. Traditional local communities inhabit valleys and low slopes, with conservation and ecotourism initiatives increasingly active in the area.

Geographically the Arfak Mountains lie on the Bird’s Head (Vogelkop) Peninsula of West Papua, west of the provincial capital Manokwari, and form a prominent highland block near Indonesia’s northern New Guinea coast.
