Main image

Arenal Volcano is a near-conical stratovolcano in northwestern Costa Rica, prominent above the town of La Fortuna. It is one of the country’s most recognisable volcanoes and was highly active for decades into the early 2000s.

Trails and lookouts in the national park and surrounding private reserves allow views of the volcano’s symmetrical cone and surrounding rainforest. The area is also known for nearby hot springs, waterfalls and panoramic vistas across Lake Arenal, which lies to the volcano’s northwest. Many organised day hikes and guided walks operate from La Fortuna, roughly 10 kilometres from the mountain.

The modern cone was built by successive eruptions; a major explosive event in 1968 significantly changed the landscape and initiated prolonged eruptive activity. Since the 2010s eruptive behaviour has decreased compared with the intense activity of the late 20th century, but the volcano remains monitored by Costa Rican authorities.

The volcano sits in Alajuela Province on the northern flank of the Cordillera de Tilarán, rising above rainforest and foothill terrain. La Fortuna is the nearest town and the main visitor base for excursions and services.

  • Height and activity: The volcano reaches about 1,657 metres above sea level and was the region's most active volcano during the late 20th century, with persistent eruptive activity from 1968 through the early 21st century.
  • Best viewing times: Best vantage points are around La Fortuna and the park trails; early morning or late afternoon light gives the clearest views when clouds are not present.

What to See #

  • Arenal Volcano National Park: Arenal Volcano National Park contains trails and viewpoints on the flanks of the cone and is the primary protected area for the volcano.
  • La Fortuna and viewpoints: The town of La Fortuna lies about 10 kilometres east of the volcano and serves as the main gateway for hikes, guides and hot-spring resorts.
  • Lake Arenal: Lake Arenal sits to the north and west of the volcano and forms a broad reservoir that shapes scenic views across the region.

Tips for Visiting Arenal Volcano #

  • Aim for very early morning (shortly after sunrise) for the best chance of clear views - afternoons are more likely to be cloudy and rainy around Arenal.
  • Use the Arenal Volcano National Park (La Fortuna entrance) and the 1968 trail for classic volcano viewpoints rather than roadside pull‑offs; official trails give safer, closer perspectives.
  • For quieter viewpoints and good wildlife/birding opportunities, check the Arenal Observatory Lodge trails-many visitors stick to the main park and miss these sections.

Best Time to Visit Arenal Volcano #

Visit during the dry season (December-April) for the best chance of clear views and easier hiking.

Dry season (best for views and hiking)
December-April · 20 to 30 °C (lowlands)
Clearer skies and less rain improve chances of volcanic-crater views, hiking and outdoor activities around Arenal.
Wet season (lusher rainforest, more rain)
May-November · 22 to 30 °C (lowlands)
Frequent afternoon showers are common; the surrounding rainforest is greener and waterfalls fuller, but trails can be muddy and views obscured.
