Archaeological Site of Sabratha

The Archaeological Site of Sabratha preserves the remains of a Roman city on Libya’s Mediterranean coast, including a prominent theatre, temples and well-preserved mosaics. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site noted for the quality of its Roman-period architecture and coastal setting.

Key highlights include the seaside theatre with its decorated scaenae frons, the forum area and temple foundations, and extensive residential and funerary remains. The coastal location gives the site a distinctive character with visible harbour-related structures.

Sabratha began as a Phoenician foundation and grew under Roman rule into a prosperous port town, with most surviving monuments dating to the Roman imperial period. Over time the town declined with changing trade routes and political shifts in late antiquity.

The site sits on the coast near the modern town of Sabratha in northwestern Libya, west of the capital, and is accessible from the coastal road network.
