Arbeia
Museum Roman fort and archaeological site at South Shields
On the River Tyne at South Shields, the Roman fort of Arbeia offers excavated walls, a small museum and re-created barrack rooms; visitors come for Roman military remains and local maritime history.
Arbeia is a Roman fort at South Shields on the north bank near the mouth of the River Tyne. It served as a supply base for Roman troops on Hadrian’s Wall and is now an archaeological site with reconstructions and a museum.
The visible site includes reconstructed ramparts and a gatehouse on the original footprint, plus exposed foundations and displays that illustrate the fort layout and daily life. The museum on site exhibits finds from excavations, including pottery, inscriptions and personal items recovered during digs.
Originally established in the early Roman period to support military logistics on the northern frontier, the fort was occupied through the Roman era and later fell into disuse before archaeological excavation and partial reconstruction in the 20th century. Excavations have clarified the fort’s role as a regional supply and administrative center.
Arbeia sits within modern South Shields, Tyne and Wear, directly adjacent to the River Tyne estuary and the North Sea coast, making it accessible from nearby urban centers in North East England.
- Roman supply base: Started as a Roman supply base for units serving on Hadrian's Wall and occupied from the early 2nd century AD through the Roman period.
- Compact site: Excavated remains and reconstructions are concentrated in a compact area close to the mouth of the River Tyne, making the site easy to combine with an itinerary around South Shields.

- Gatehouse and ramparts: The reconstructed Gatehouse and fort ramparts have been rebuilt on the original Roman footprint and provide the main visible impression of the fort today.
- Museum: Arbeia Roman Fort Museum presents finds from the excavations, including pottery, inscriptions and everyday Roman objects, with displays that explain the fort's role as a supply base for Hadrian's Wall.
