Aransas National Wildlife Refuge
Park Coastal refuge in Texas, vital bird habitat
Along the Texas Gulf Coast, Aransas NWR protects coastal marshes and barrier islands; birders come for whooping crane sightings, migratory shorebirds, canoeing and quiet wildlife viewing near Rockport and Port Aransas.
Aransas National Wildlife Refuge is a protected coastal and estuarine area on the Texas Gulf Coast established to conserve habitat for migratory and resident wildlife. It is a key conservation area for coastal marshes, barrier islands and tidal flats in the region.
The refuge is internationally known as the primary wintering area for an endangered population of whooping cranes, and it supports a range of other waterbirds, shorebirds and estuarine species. The landscape includes marshes, tidal flats, bay shorelines and oak-covered uplands used by a variety of species.
The refuge was created in the 20th century to protect coastal habitat and populations of threatened birds; management since then has focused on habitat protection, water management and species monitoring. Public access is organised through designated observation points, trails and a visitor facility to reduce disturbance to sensitive areas.
Geographically the refuge lies on the Texas coast near the towns of Rockport and Austwell, bordering San Antonio Bay and the Gulf coastal plain.
- Whooping crane season: The refuge is the primary wintering ground for a population of endangered whooping cranes, with the best viewing season in late fall through early spring.
- Visitor access: A visitor centre and managed routes provide viewpoints; guided programs and regulated viewing areas help minimise disturbance to wildlife.
