Aragonese Castle
Castle Medieval fortress on volcanic islet connected by causeway
Connected to Ischia Ponte by a stone causeway, the Castello Aragonese dates to the 15th century and contains chapels, fortifications and coastal viewpoints. Visitors walk the ramparts, photograph the harbour and dine in nearby streets.
A seaside fortress in Campania rising from a volcanic rock off the town of Ischia, connected to the main island by a causeway. It occupies a strategic position above the harbor and town of Ischia Ponte.
The site contains courtyards, chapels, and defensive structures on the rock; visitors explore winding passages and terraces with views over the sea. Access is by foot across the bridge from the old town.
The site has long-standing strategic and residential uses and was significantly strengthened by Aragonese rulers in the 15th century, giving the castle its modern name and much of its fortification layout.
Located on the northeastern shore of Ischia island in the Gulf of Naples, the castle sits immediately adjacent to the historic quarter of Ischia Ponte and is reached from the town’s waterfront.
- Views: The fortress dominates the town of Ischia Ponte and offers panoramic views over the Gulf of Naples from its terraces and battlements.
What to See #
- Castle precincts: The castle complex stands on a rocky islet linked to the island of Ischia by a narrow causeway, with courtyards, chapels, and defensive walls arranged on the rock.
How to Get to Aragonese Castle #
Castello Aragonese (Ischia) is reached by ferry or hydrofoil from Naples. From Naples’ passenger piers (Molo Beverello/Calata Porta di Massa) take a hydrofoil or ferry to Ischia Porto (operators include several regular ferry companies); from Ischia Porto it is a 10-15 minute walk along the seafront to the Ischia Ponte causeway that links to the Aragonese Castle. If driving, you must take your car on a ferry from the mainland ports serving Naples/ Pozzuoli; the castle itself is pedestrian only once on the Ischia Ponte causeway.
Tips for Visiting Aragonese Castle #
- Visit early in the morning right when the castle opens to avoid day-tripper crowds from Naples and Ischia ferries; the narrow causeway and terraces fill up by late morning.
- Use the main pedestrian access from Ischia Ponte (the stone/bridge approach) - that's where the ticket office is and it gives the straightforward route through the castle complex.
- Don't skip the upper terraces and small chapels: many visitors stay at ground level, so climb the walkways for panoramic views of the bay and quieter corners of the fortifications.
- Check the castle's official website or local tourist office for seasonal opening hours and occasional closures for private events before you go.
Best Time to Visit Aragonese Castle #
Visit in late spring or early autumn for mild weather and smaller crowds while still enjoying coastal views.
