Arab Baths of Girona

The Arab Baths of Girona (Banys Arabs) are a medieval public bath complex in Girona’s historic center, built in a style inspired by Roman and Islamic bath traditions. The surviving structure is dated mainly to the 12th and 13th centuries and retains the characteristic sequence of rooms associated with public bathing.

The complex includes a central, columned hall, a warm room and other chambers organized around service areas and cisterns. The architecture emphasises vaulted stone chambers and semicircular arches rather than decorative tilework.

The baths were built for public practical use during the medieval period and later fell out of use as bathing practices changed; they have been preserved as an archaeological and architectural monument within the old town. Conservation work over the 19th and 20th centuries exposed and stabilised the remains for public access.

Situated in Girona’s Barri Vell, the baths sit near the cathedral and the city’s medieval streets, making them easy to reach on foot from central Girona.
