Apamea, Syria

Apamea is an ancient Hellenistic and Roman city site in Hama Governorate, Syria, founded in the early Hellenistic period by Seleucus I Nicator around the 3rd century BC. It is notable for being one of the region’s large classical urban sites with extensive visible ruins.

The site’s most prominent feature is a long colonnaded avenue laid out on a grid plan; surviving stretches run for hundreds of metres and mark the city’s former main thoroughfare. Other highlights include the remains of a large Roman theatre and substantial public and commercial building foundations that illustrate the city’s civic layout.

Apamea was established under the Seleucid dynasty and later developed under Roman rule as a major regional centre. Over many centuries the city declined and was altered by successive periods of occupation, seismic events, and reuse of building materials, leaving the substantial archaeological ruins visible today.

The ruins lie on the Orontes plain in western Hama Governorate, northwest of the city of Hama. The site occupies a riverplain landscape with agricultural land around it and is reached via local roads from nearby towns.

• Visitor access: Substantial exposed ruins lie in an agricultural plain; access and on-site facilities are limited compared with major tourist sites.
• Best viewing points: The main archaeological features extend for hundreds of metres and are best seen from the higher ground of the citadel or from cleared pathways through the site.

What to See #

• Colonnaded avenue: Long colonnaded main street running through the city remains the most extensive single feature, with columns and pavement fragments aligned along the Roman grid plan; excavations have exposed sections over hundreds of metres.
• Roman theatre: A large theatre and associated public buildings dating to the Hellenistic and Roman periods, visible as stone seating and foundation remains.
• Citadel: A medieval citadel and later fortifications occupying the acropolis area, visible as an elevated enclosure overlooking the ruins.
