Ap Lei Chau is a small island immediately south of Hong Kong Island, part of the city’s Southern District and connected to the urban core by at least one fixed road bridge. It is a densely developed residential and light-industrial island with busy harbour areas.

The island contains large residential complexes such as South Horizons, local markets, small shipyards and the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter, which accommodates working boats and leisure craft. It has short ferry, road and rail connections to central Hong Kong and is integrated into the city’s public transport network.

Historically the island developed from a fishing and boatbuilding community into a high-density urban neighbourhood during Hong Kong’s post-war expansion, with substantial land reclamation and residential development in the late 20th century.

Geographically Ap Lei Chau sits off the southern coast of Hong Kong Island within Victoria Harbour approaches, with compact urban shoreline and short distances by road and ferry to central districts of Hong Kong.

  • Transport and density: Ap Lei Chau is one of Hong Kong's most densely developed islands, connected to Hong Kong Island by road bridges and served by the MTR South Island Line at Lei Tung station.

What to See #

  • South Horizons estate: South Horizons, a large private residential estate occupying much of the northern and eastern parts of the island and connected to Hong Kong Island by bridges and road links.
  • Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter: Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter and the harbour area serving local fishing boats, floating seafood restaurants and small marine businesses on the northwestern shore.
