Guatapé

Guatapé is a lakeside town in Antioquia Department, Colombia, famed for its colourful streets and a nearby large granite monolith known as El Peñol or La Piedra. The area sits on the reservoir created by hydroelectric works and is a popular day‑trip from the Medellín region.

The principal attractions are the painted town centre - where houses display carved and painted bas‑reliefs called zócalos - and El Peñol, a 200‑metre‑plus rock that visitors climb via a 740‑step staircase to reach panoramic views over the reservoir and island‑dotted landscape. Boat tours on the reservoir are also common.

The modern tourist profile developed after the creation of the Guatapé reservoir for hydroelectric power, which changed the local landscape and increased lake access. The town’s decorative zócalos reflect local cultural traditions that have been emphasised for tourism.

Guatapé and El Peñol lie in eastern Antioquia department, in the foothills of the Andes beside the Peñol‑Guatapé reservoir, within a few hours’ drive east of Medellín.
