Archaeological Site Ruined Roman city founded by Emperor Hadrian
Roman‑founded city on the Nile’s east bank established by Hadrian; attracts visitors for Greco‑Roman ruins, inscriptions and regional archaeological sites.
Antinoöpolis is an archaeological site in Middle Egypt founded by the Roman emperor Hadrian in 130 AD in memory of Antinous. The city was laid out with Roman urban planning and became an important cultural and administrative center in the Roman and Byzantine periods.
Excavations have exposed parts of the city grid, public buildings, temples and churches, and richly decorated domestic and funerary remains including mosaics. The site changed character with the spread of Christianity and later declined after the Arab conquest.
