The Anti-Lebanon mountains are a mountain chain that runs along and helps form the international boundary between Lebanon and Syria. The range is a prominent east-west barrier rising above the Lebanese Beqaa Valley and the Syrian interior.

The chain includes high massifs and plateaus, with alpine and subalpine climates on the higher slopes and Mediterranean conditions below. Seasonal snow commonly accumulates on the highest peaks, and some slopes support winter recreation facilities.

Geographically the range lies immediately east of the Mount Lebanon range and forms a natural frontier; the highest and most notable massif in the chain is Mount Hermon, which attains the greatest elevations in the Anti-Lebanon.

The range influences local climate, hydrology and land use on both the Lebanese and Syrian sides and forms a visible feature from surrounding plains and valleys.

  • Border and geography: The Anti-Lebanon range runs roughly along the border between Lebanon and Syria and separates the Beqaa Valley to the west from Syrian plains to the east.
  • Highest peak and snow: The highest summit in the range is Mount Hermon, which reaches roughly 2,800 to 2,900 meters and supports seasonal snow and winter sports facilities on some slopes.

What to See #

  • Mount Hermon: Mount Hermon (the range's highest massif) rises to the highest elevation in the Anti-Lebanon and is a prominent geographic and climatic feature of the chain.

How to Get to Anti-Lebanon mountains #

The Anti‑Lebanon mountain range runs along the Lebanon-Syria border; it is approached from the Beqaa Valley side via the main Beirut-Damascus road and local access roads. From Lebanese cities such as Zahle or Baalbek you can drive east/up toward the foothills on regional roads; routes into higher, remote ridges require local mountain roads.

Public transport to remote mountain areas is limited-use a private vehicle or local guide for mountain access and check current security and border considerations before travelling.

Tips for Visiting Anti-Lebanon mountains #

  • Remember the Anti‑Lebanon range straddles the Lebanon-Syria border (it includes Mount Hermon); check up‑to‑date travel advisories and border restrictions before planning any visit.
  • Favor viewpoints and routes on the Lebanese/Bekaa Valley side (for example around Baalbek) and use licensed local guides-they know safe roads and which areas are off‑limits.
  • Avoid approaching border strips or unmarked tracks; the frontier terrain can be sensitive and conditions (including military activity and unexploded ordnance) change, so stick to established roads and guided itineraries.

Best Time to Visit Anti-Lebanon mountains #

Best in spring or autumn for mild weather and good hiking conditions; winters bring snow at higher elevations and can limit access-check local safety advisories.

Spring (best overall)
March-May · ~10-20°C (50-68°F) in lower elevations; cooler at higher altitudes
Mild temperatures and green landscapes make it a good time for hiking; access is generally easier than in winter.
Summer (warm, variable by elevation)
June-August · ~20-35°C (68-95°F) in valleys; high elevations remain cooler
Warm to hot in lower areas; higher altitudes offer relief but expect stronger sun and variable mountain weather.
Winter (snow at altitude)
December-February · ~−5-5°C (23-41°F) at higher elevations; milder in valleys
Higher slopes commonly see snow - winter travel can be difficult and local conditions vary; check safety advisories and local access rules.
