The Anti-Atlas is a mountain chain in southern Morocco that lies to the south of the High Atlas and runs roughly parallel to the Atlantic coast. It is a geologically older range that marks the transition from the coastal plains into the southern interior.

The region is noted for stark, often rugged scenery, deep valleys and scattered Berber villages rather than high glaciated peaks; it is popular for road trips, cultural visits and lower-altitude trekking. The landscape features volcanic outcrops, folded rock formations and arid plateaus.

Formed in much earlier geological periods than the High Atlas, the Anti-Atlas exposes older basement and sedimentary rocks and has supported local agricultural and pastoral communities for millennia. Historic trade and transhumance routes cross parts of the range.

The Anti-Atlas lies in southern Morocco, stretching from the southwestern margins near the Souss-Massa region eastward toward interior valleys and the Dra’a region, and is accessible from coastal cities such as Agadir.

How to Get to Anti-Atlas #

The Anti-Atlas is a broad mountain range in southern Morocco; common access points are the towns of Tafraoute, Taliouine and the Atlantic-coast city of Agadir. From Agadir or the nearby town of Tiznit you can reach Anti-Atlas foothills by car or by regional bus services that run between those towns and mountain villages; local taxi or 4x4 transfer is often needed to reach remote valleys and passes.

If you plan to visit specific sights (for example Tafraoute or Taliouine) use those towns as bases - most hiking routes and scenic roads start from village centers where you can park and walk into the hills. Walking distances from town parking or bus stops vary by valley and trailhead.

Tips for Visiting Anti-Atlas #

  • Visit the Anti‑Atlas in autumn-spring and aim for early morning or late afternoon-temperatures are far more comfortable and the low light brings out the color and texture of the granite landscape for photography.
  • Use Tafraoute or Tiznit as your gateway towns rather than trying to base yourself in far‑flung spots; both offer easier access to marked roads, local guides and basic services for excursions into the range.
  • Many visitors stick to the main passes; hire a local Berber guide to reach side valleys, painted granite boulders and small mountain villages that are easy to miss and give a much richer sense of the region.
