Antelope Island is the largest island in the Great Salt Lake, Utah, and is managed as Antelope Island State Park. The island preserves natural habitats, historic ranch buildings and extensive shoreline around the lake.

Recreational highlights include wildlife viewing - most notably a free-ranging herd of American bison - hiking trails up to viewpoints such as Frary Peak, and the historic Fielding Garr Ranch complex. The island’s roads and trails provide access to beaches, viewpoints and interpretive sites for geology and natural history.

Historically the island has been used for ranching and grazing as well as for salt industry activities; it is now a state park with visitor facilities and interpretive displays. Seasonal operations and visitor services are run by the park authority to support outdoor recreation and conservation.

Antelope Island lies in the northern part of the Great Salt Lake and is reached by a paved causeway from the mainland near the town of Syracuse, within the Salt Lake City metropolitan region.

How to Get to Antelope Island #

Antelope Island is reached via the Antelope Island Causeway off I‑15 at the 3300 North exit in Syracuse, Utah. The drive from Salt Lake City is about 40-50 minutes. Once on the island, a paved road leads to the visitor center and main trailheads.

Tips for Visiting Antelope Island #

  • Arrive at sunrise to catch the island bathed in cold, clear light and to spot bison moving along the flats.
  • Bring a windproof jacket; the Great Salt Lake can funnel relentless winds onto the island.
  • If hiking the Frary Peak Trail, start early - the climb is steep and exposed with little shade.
