Annobón Island
Island Remote volcanic island of Equatorial Guinea
Annobón Island lies remote in the Gulf of Guinea, with volcanic hills, dense forests and small fishing communities; travellers arrive infrequently by boat or chartered flight to experience local Creole culture.
Annobón is a small volcanic island in the Gulf of Guinea that is part of Equatorial Guinea, with an area of roughly 17 square kilometres. It is the administrative seat of the province of Annobón and is one of the country’s most remote inhabited islands.
The island offers short coastal plains, rocky cliffs and small sandy bays, local fishing communities and dense inland vegetation; tourism infrastructure is minimal and visits are typically by infrequent boat or charter. Marine life and small-scale fishing are important locally, and the settlement pattern is concentrated in a single main village.
Portuguese sailors sighted and settled the island in the Age of Discovery and it later came under Spanish administration; it is now administered as part of Equatorial Guinea. Over time the island retained a largely rural economy based on fishing and subsistence agriculture.
Annobón sits in the southern part of the Gulf of Guinea, well offshore from the west African coast and separate from Equatorial Guinea’s main islands and continental territory. The island’s remoteness defines both its culture and access patterns.
