Ankara Castle
Castle Ancient citadel dominating Ankara's old city center
Perched above Ankara’s old quarter, Ankara Castle anchors the city’s ancient core with battlements, narrow streets and craft shops. Visitors walk the ramparts for city panoramas and nearby museums in Ulus.
Ankara Castle is a fortified citadel on the dominant hill of historic Ankara, Turkey, with visible fortification phases from antiquity through medieval and Ottoman periods.
The site comprises an inner citadel with a compact maze of historic houses and an outer ring of defensive walls and towers, offering vistas across modern Ankara. Walkable ramparts and narrow streets host small shops and traditional houses, making the castle a compact urban historic quarter.
The hill has been fortified since at least Roman and Byzantine times and was altered by successive Seljuk and Ottoman occupants; surviving stonework reflects multiple repair campaigns across centuries. It functioned as the city’s defensive core while the town expanded below.
Perched in the Ulus district of central Ankara, the castle sits on the highest point of the old city and overlooks the surrounding provinces and urban centre.
- Best viewing times: The citadel sits at the highest point of the old city and provides panoramic views across Ankara; sunrise and sunset are popular times for city vistas.
- Access and surroundings: Access is on foot from the Ulus quarter and some inner streets contain small museums, workshops and restored traditional houses.
