Anemurium
Archaeological Site Ruined Roman-Byzantine city near modern Anamur
Anemurium’s coastal Roman and Byzantine ruins near Anamur include baths, mosaics and sea-facing walls; travellers combine archaeology visits with nearby Mediterranean beaches.
Anemurium is the archaeological remains of a Greco-Roman town on the southern coast of what is now Mersin Province in Turkey, adjacent to the modern district of Anamur. The site contains urban structures laid out along the coastal plateau and cliff edge.
Key monuments include a theatre, extensive Roman baths, colonnaded streets and a substantial necropolis on the cliffs overlooking the sea. Several early Byzantine churches and basilicas show the site’s continued occupation into Late Antiquity.
Excavations and surveys have revealed standing masonry, floor mosaics and funerary monuments that document the town’s development under Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine influence. The ruins illustrate the urban character of a provincial coastal centre and its maritime connections.
Anemurium is situated on a headland near the modern town of Anamur on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, where the surviving ruins lie close to the shoreline and cliff faces.
