Central Valira Valley (Andorra la Vella & Escaldes)
May brings noticeably greener streets and blossom in the valley; temperatures regularly reach 15-20°C and days lengthen, making terraces in Andorra la Vella comfortable. Melting snow fuels waterfalls visible from viewpoints around Escaldes and the lower Madriu-Perafita-Claror paths become accessible for day hikes. This is a good shoulder-season time to visit: fewer crowds than July but take a light rain jacket for passing showers and cooler evenings.
Vallnord - La Massana & Pal-Arinsal
May generally melts the winter away on lower slopes while high ridges retain patches through the month; mountain-biking trails begin to open in La Massana. Rivers fed by the snowpack are lively and waterfalls near the Ordino border are especially active, making short, wet hikes rewarding. Pack waterproof footwear and be prepared for cool mornings; mountain huts begin their high-season preparations, and guided summer activities reappear.
Grandvalira & Eastern Resorts (Canillo, Soldeu, Pas de la Casa)
May largely sees ski operations closed except for rare high-elevation pockets; Pas de la Casa and ridge tops may still hold snow in shaded gullies. Mountain trails begin to open for hiking but expect patches of slush and late-season icy patches above 2,200-2,500m. This shoulder-month is quieter and better for long hikes in the Madriu valley or low passes; bring waterproof shoes and warm layers for early starts.
Northern High Valleys (Ordino & Arcalís, Coma Pedrosa approaches)
May is when the northern valleys green up quickly below 1,800m and wildflowers appear on meadow leads; higher cols remain snowy and sometimes impassable. Access to alpine huts opens gradually and trail markers re-emerge as snow retreats; waterfalls are impressive from the meltwater. This is prime time for quieter trekking before the summer rush - bring gaiters for muddy sections and a map for re-routed trails.
Southern Lowlands & Sant Julià de Lòria
May is reliably springlike: warm, clear days and lush valley floors make it pleasant for cycling and riverside walks, with nearby mountain trails opening for day trips. The chestnut groves at the southern flanks show new growth and Madriu valley access points are easy to reach. Travelers should pack sunscreen, a light fleece, and waterproof trousers for higher-elevation excursions where late patches of snow may linger.
