Central Valira Valley (Andorra la Vella & Escaldes)
February keeps a firm winter feel, often the coldest or among the coldest months in the valley; highs stay close to freezing with cold snaps dipping below -5°C at night in sheltered spots. Nearby ski resorts in Grandvalira and Vallnord are usually in full swing, so central hotels can fill at weekends - book ahead if you want a city base. Snowmelt isn’t an issue yet, so glaciers aren’t relevant, but bring microspikes for icy pavements and a warm coat for evenings among the thermal pools.
Vallnord - La Massana & Pal-Arinsal
February retains strong winter conditions with good pistes and regular snowmaking in lower sectors if natural snowfall lags; piste grooming keeps runs reliable. Avalanche mitigation can close backcountry routes after heavy dumps, so stick to monitored runs or guided tours if venturing off-piste. Expect busy weekends, vibrant après-ski in La Massana, and the need for crampons or warm boots when wandering outside resort boundaries at night.
Grandvalira & Eastern Resorts (Canillo, Soldeu, Pas de la Casa)
February keeps the ski areas crowded and typically cold, with piste maintenance at its best and reliable snow quality at higher elevations. Ski schools are full and cross-border traffic increases at Pas de la Casa, so allow extra time for transfers; avalanche-control measures can close backcountry access after big storms. Nightlife in the resort towns picks up on weekends; insulated layers and a helmet for lift-served descents are sensible.
Northern High Valleys (Ordino & Arcalís, Coma Pedrosa approaches)
February keeps the high valleys in an alpine winter grip: heavy snowfall is frequent and visibility can drop during storms, particularly above 1,800-2,000m. Cross-country and backcountry options run from Ordino-Arcalís but require experience or guides because conditions change rapidly. Expect winter conditions to dictate itineraries - pack layers for severe cold and check local avalanche bulletins before venturing out.
Southern Lowlands & Sant Julià de Lòria
February can be one of the coldest months for nights, yet daytime conditions in Sant Julià are comfortable for winter walks if the sun is out, often reaching low double-digits Celsius on clear days. Heavy snow events tend to sit higher up, so this area is a reasonable low-elevation base for quieter winter exploration. Pack layers and a warm hat for early mornings and bring traction aids if ice is forecast.
