Ancient City of Qalhat
Historical Site Medieval port ruins reflecting Indian Ocean trade
Coastal ruins near Sur, Qalhat reveal the foundations of a former Indian Ocean port; visitors inspect masonry remains, the site’s layout and the coastal setting linked to medieval maritime trade.
The Ancient City of Qalhat is the archaeological remains of a medieval port on Oman’s eastern coast near the modern town of Sur. It is known for the stone foundations and fragmentary remains of buildings tied to long-distance maritime trade.
The visible remains include foundation outlines, collapsed masonry, and the site of a mosque, set in a windswept coastal setting. There are few standing structures; interpretation relies on excavated foundations, layout traces, and scattered stonework.
Qalhat developed as a regional trading and seafaring centre in medieval times and features material evidence of its role in Indian Ocean commerce. Over time the port declined and its structures fell into ruin, and the area today is an archaeological complex rather than a functioning urban settlement.
The site lies on Oman’s Ash Sharqiyah coast close to the harbour town of Sur, set directly on the Arabian Sea shoreline.
