Main image

Amri is an archaeological settlement site in Sindh province, Pakistan, associated with the pre-Harappan Amri cultural horizon and dated to the fourth-third millennium BCE. It is one of several Chalcolithic sites in the Indus Valley region that illustrate regional variations before the rise of mature Harappan urbanism.

Excavated layers at the site include mud-brick architecture and distinct pottery assemblages that typify the Amri cultural phase. Finds show a sequence of occupation and material culture changes rather than a single-period occupation.

The site was investigated by 20th-century archaeologists as part of efforts to document prehistoric settlement in lower Sindh; stratified deposits there have been used to define the Amri cultural assemblage and its relationship to neighbouring traditions. Over time the site yielded ceramics, structural remains and evidence for small-scale domestic activities.

Amri sits in the alluvial plain of Sindh in southern Pakistan, within the broader Indus Valley cultural landscape. The location is rural and archaeological remains are part of the local agricultural environment.
