Ammersoyen Castle

Kasteel Ammersoyen is a medieval moated castle in the village of Ammerzoden, in the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands, originating in the 14th century. It is one of the better-preserved medieval strongholds in the Dutch river area.

The site preserves a rectangular keep with corner towers, a surrounding moat and an inner courtyard. Visitors see masonry defensive works and restored interior rooms with displays about the castle’s past.

Construction began in the mid-14th century for the local lordship; the castle passed through regional noble families and underwent periods of damage and restoration before being conserved in the modern era. Historic use was military-residential, serving as a fortified residence and local seat of power.

The castle sits beside the River Maas (Meuse) near the village of Ammerzoden in the municipality of Maasdriel, Gelderland, roughly within the riverine landscape of central-eastern Netherlands.
