Amman Citadel
Archaeological Site Ancient hilltop fortress with archaeological remains
Perched on Amman’s highest hill, the Citadel exposes Roman, Byzantine and Umayyad ruins: the Temple of Hercules, Umayyad Palace and small archaeology museum. Visitors come for archaeology and wide city views.
The Amman Citadel is an archaeological site on the summit of Jabal al-Qal’a in central Amman, Jordan, notable for visible remains from Roman, Byzantine, and early Islamic periods. The hill has been occupied intermittently since antiquity and forms one of the city’s principal heritage sites.
The hill has been occupied in successive periods; important surviving structures date to the Roman period (including the Temple of Hercules), the Byzantine era, and the Umayyad period when a palace complex was built. Excavations in the 20th century exposed these layers and established the site as a museum and archaeological park.
Sited on a prominent hill in the historic core of Amman, within walking distance of the Roman Theatre and Amman’s downtown. The citadel sits at the heart of the modern city and is easily reached from central Amman.
- Best viewpoint: Provides panoramic views across central Amman and the surrounding hills; the western edge of the hill is a popular viewpoint at sunset.
- Mixed periods: Site combines visible remains from Roman (including a large temple platform), Byzantine, and Umayyad periods, so expect layers of architecture in a compact area.
What to See #
- Citadel complex: Located on the summit of Jabal al-Qal'a in central Amman, containing several distinct archaeological structures from different periods including Roman, Byzantine, and early Islamic remains.
- Major monuments: A cluster of excavated monuments including the **Temple of Hercules**, the Umayyad Palace complex with its restored tower, and foundations of a Byzantine church.
- Jordan Archaeological Museum: Houses the Jordan Archaeological Museum which displays artifacts from prehistoric to Islamic periods recovered from the citadel and surrounding areas.
How to Get to Amman Citadel #
The Amman Citadel (Jabal al-Qal’a) is in downtown Amman (the old city). Take a taxi or local city bus to the Roman Theater/Al-Balad area of central Amman; from the Roman Theater or downtown it’s a short uphill walk of about 5-10 minutes to the Citadel.
Driving from other parts of Amman typically takes 10-20 minutes depending on traffic; there is limited visitor parking near the site.
Tips for Visiting Amman Citadel #
- Go in the late afternoon for cooler temperatures and the best views across Amman - the low sun brings out the texture of the ruins and the city panorama from the hilltop is at its best then.
- Start your visit at the Jordan Archaeological Museum on the citadel to get context for the Umayyad Palace, the Temple of Hercules and other monuments you'll see across the site; many people explore the open ruins without pausing in the museum.
- Allow time to walk to the western edge of the hill for quieter viewpoints and photo angles; the main central areas attract the largest groups, so the perimeters are often less crowded.
Best Time to Visit Amman Citadel #
Best visited in spring or autumn when temperatures are mild and walking the exposed hilltop is most comfortable.
