Amboseli National Park
Park Savannah park known for elephants and Kilimanjaro views
Amboseli National Park offers close wildlife viewing with sweeping views of Mount Kilimanjaro across the Kenya-Tanzania border. Visitors seek large elephant herds, wetland birdlife and classic Kilimanjaro-backed photography.
Amboseli National Park is a Kenyan protected area renowned for large elephant herds and for its views across the border to Mount Kilimanjaro. The park’s mosaic of marshes, grassland and open plains supports abundant wildlife in a relatively compact area.
Marshes and shallow wetlands attract elephants, buffalo, wildebeest and a range of water-dependent birdlife, producing reliable daytime sightings. Open plains and raised viewing points provide photographic opportunities with Mount Kilimanjaro visible on clear days.
The area has long been recognized for its wildlife and was progressively set aside for protection during the 20th century to conserve elephant habitats and other species. Today the park is managed for both conservation and tourism.
Located in southern Kenya near the Tanzania border in Kajiado County, the park sits on relatively flat plains with waterlogged areas that contrast with the surrounding semi-arid lands.
- Best time for Kilimanjaro views: Early mornings offer the clearest views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the best lighting for photographing elephants with the volcano as a backdrop.
- Key wildlife note: Large elephant herds are a signature sight, and game tends to concentrate around the park's marshy areas during the dry season.
What to See #
- Amboseli marshes and wetlands: Open marshes and seasonal wetlands fed by streams that originate from the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, providing key water sources for wildlife.
- Observation viewpoints: An elevated viewpoint area used to watch wildlife congregations and to photograph Mount Kilimanjaro across the border.
How to Get to Amboseli National Park #
Amboseli National Park is most commonly reached from Nairobi. By road it’s a 4-5 hour drive (roughly 200-250 km depending on route) southeast of Nairobi; the usual overland approach is via the Nairobi-Emali/Namanga corridor with a final turn onto the Kajiado/Oloitokitok roads toward the park gates. Regular charter and scheduled light aircraft fly from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to small airstrips servicing Amboseli lodges. If arriving by public bus to towns such as Emali or Namanga, arrange a lodge transfer for the final 30-60 km into the park; game‑drive meeting points are typically a short drive from those drop‑off points.
Tips for Visiting Amboseli National Park #
- Schedule game drives at first light for the best views of elephants with Mount Kilimanjaro as a backdrop - the mountain is clearest in the cooler early hours and animal activity is higher then.
- Ask your lodge or guide to prioritise the park's swamp and wetland areas during drives; Amboseli's marshes concentrate elephants and birdlife and provide the classic Kilimanjaro-with-elephant photo opportunities many visitors seek.
- If you want a quieter experience, choose a smaller camp inside or adjacent to the park rather than a large lodge; early-morning departures from inside the park get you ahead of the busiest vehicle lines at popular waterholes.
