How to Get to Ambo, Ethiopia#
Ambo is most easily reached by road from Addis Ababa, the country’s principal airport. Scheduled domestic air service to Ambo is limited, so minibuses and private cars are the standard ways to travel between Ambo and the capital.
Bole International Airport, Addis Ababa (ADD): Addis Ababa is the main international gateway to Ethiopia. From Addis to Ambo by road is typically 2-3 hours (roughly 100-120 km) depending on traffic; private transfers or taxis from Addis usually cost approximately ETB 1,000-2,500 for a private car.
Ambo Airport (local / domestic): Ambo has a small airstrip/airport used occasionally for regional flights and charter services. Scheduled commercial flights are limited - most travellers use Addis Ababa and continue overland.
Train: Ethiopia’s national passenger rail network does not currently serve Ambo (Addis-Djibouti and newer standard-gauge lines focus on other corridors). Overland road transport is the usual option.

- Private car / taxi (ETB 1,000-2,500) - Hiring a private car from Addis gives a faster, more comfortable door-to-door transfer to Ambo. This is a sensible option if travelling with luggage or a group; agree a fixed price before departure.
- Local buses / minibuses inside Ambo (ETB 5-50) - Local minibuses handle short journeys within Ambo and to nearby villages. They are very inexpensive and frequent but can be crowded and run to informal timetables.
- Motorbike taxi (where available) (ETB 20-100) - In some areas motorbike taxis offer quick short-distance travel; they are handy but less common and carry higher safety risk. Use helmets and exercise caution.
- Walking - Ambo’s central area is compact and easily explored on foot. Streets in the town centre are pedestrian-friendly, though road crossings may be busy at peak times.
