Aljafería

The Aljafería is a fortified medieval palace in Zaragoza, in Spain’s Aragon region, originally built in the 11th century under the Taifa of Zaragoza. It is an important surviving example of Islamic palace architecture on the Iberian Peninsula and later accumulated Christian and Mudéjar modifications.

Ornate courtyard and reception spaces with intricate plasterwork and arches that represent Taifa-period decoration and later Mudejar craftsmanship. The complex also contains defensive walls and towers alongside ceremonial halls, attracting visitors interested in medieval Islamic architecture and later Hispanic medieval history.

The original palace was constructed in the 11th century as a residence for the Hudid rulers of Zaragoza; after the Christian conquest it was modified and reused by Aragonese monarchs and later repurposed for administrative and military functions. Subsequent centuries saw restorations and additions that layered Gothic and Mudéjar features onto the original Islamic layout.

Aljafería sits within the city of Zaragoza near the city centre, within the urban fabric of the Ebro river plain. It is accessible from central Zaragoza and forms part of the city’s historic core.

• The Aljafería Palace is in Zaragoza’s city area. From Zaragoza-Delicias railway station it is roughly a 4 km drive (about 10-15 minutes by car or taxi). From the historic centre (Plaza del Pilar) the palace is a 20-25 minute walk or a short local-bus/taxi ride.

• By public transport: Zaragoza’s city buses serve stops close to the palace from central locations; check the local bus network for the nearest stop, or use a short taxi from Delicias station for the quickest access.

• Join a scheduled guided visit if possible-guided tours explain the Mudejar decoration and later medieval additions that many casual visitors miss and often include rooms closed to independent visitors.
• Arrive in the morning to avoid the midday heat and school groups; the palace complex is compact, so early visits let you linger in the main Golden Hall and inner courtyard with fewer people.
• Check opening hours ahead; parts of the Aljafería serve as the regional parliament and sections may be closed to tourists on sitting days or for official events.
