Main image

Timgad is the remains of a Roman colonial town in northeastern Algeria, founded around 100 CE by the emperor Trajan as a settlement for veterans. The site is notable for its unusually intact orthogonal street grid and surviving civic buildings, making it a key example of Roman town planning.

The main highlights include the straight decumanus and cardo axes that organize the town, the ceremonial Arch of Trajan, a large forum area, an open-air theatre and public baths. These elements give a clear sense of the town’s original layout and function as a planned military-colonial settlement.

Timgad was established under Roman imperial authority and developed through the 2nd and 3rd centuries CE; it later declined with changing political and economic conditions in late antiquity and the early medieval period. Excavation and conservation work in the 20th century exposed much of the street grid and major monuments still visible today.

The ruins lie in the Aurès region of northeastern Algeria in Batna Province, about 30 km east of the city of Batna and set on a plateau above surrounding agricultural land.

  • Foundation: Founded around 100 CE as a Roman colony for veterans under the Emperor Trajan and laid out on a strict orthogonal grid.
  • UNESCO: Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its exceptionally complete Roman town plan and surviving public monuments.

What to See #

  • Arch of Trajan: A monumental triple-arched gate that marks one of the principal ceremonial entrances to the town; it is one of the most photographed monuments at the site.
  • Forum: The central public square of the Roman town, flanked historically by civic buildings and commercial activity and defined by the town's orthogonal grid.
  • Theatre: A well-preserved open-air theatre located on the town's southern side, originally used for performances and public assemblies.
  • Baths and service buildings: Complexes of thermal baths with surviving masonry and hypocaust features that illustrate everyday urban life in the colony.

How to Get to Timgad #

Timgad (Thamugadi) is best accessed from the provincial capital Batna, about 30-40 km to the west. Drive east from Batna on the main regional roads (the Batna-Timgad route), a trip of roughly 30-40 minutes by car; there are also local buses and tourist minibuses serving the site from Batna. The archaeological remains have adjacent visitor parking and the site is reached on foot within a few minutes from the parking area.

Tips for Visiting Timgad #

  • Visit Timgad early or late in the day to avoid peak desert heat and to get the best side-light on the orthogonal streets and ruins laid out by Trajan's planners.
  • Start your walk along the main cardo/decumanus axes to understand the Roman grid layout - following the principal streets quickly reveals the theatre, forum and the site's urban planning, which many visitors overlook.
  • Allow time to walk up to elevated viewpoints around the site for an overview of the grid pattern; the broad vistas make the intent of the Roman plan much clearer than individual ruins alone.
