Area Mountain fortress and valley in Qazvin, Ismaili stronghold
High in Qazvin’s Alamut valley, the ruined Alamut fortress associated with Hassan‑i Sabbah draws hikers and history buffs to steep paths, stone ruins and mountain scenery.
Alamut is a medieval mountain fortress complex in Qazvin province, Iran, notable as the headquarters of the Nizari Ismailis during the medieval period. The site survives as a series of ruins perched on a steep rock above the Alamut Valley.
Visitors encounter the remains of defensive walls, foundations, water cisterns and terraced outworks on the rocky spur that once held the castle. The site offers hiking approaches through the valley and views across the surrounding Alborz foothills.
The fortress was captured by Hassan-i Sabbah in 1090 and became the principal stronghold of the Nizari Ismailis until the mid-13th century. It was dismantled during the Mongol campaigns of 1256, after which the site fell into ruin.
