Alalakh
Archaeological Site Ancient Near Eastern city and archaeological tell site
An ancient tell (Tell Açana) in Hatay Province, Alalakh was a Bronze Age regional capital excavated by Leonard Woolley; finds include seals and inscriptions. The site draws archaeology visitors interested in eastern Mediterranean Bronze Age history.
Alalakh is an ancient Bronze Age city site in Hatay Province in southern Turkey, commonly identified with the archaeological tell called Tell Atchana. It is an important regional capital from the late 3rd and 2nd millennia BCE known for its palace and written archives.
Excavated areas reveal a palace complex, administrative archive of cuneiform tablets and multiple occupation levels covering centuries of settlement. Visitors see exposed mudbrick foundations, palace remains and trenches that display urban organisation and burial deposits.
Systematic excavations were carried out in the 1930s and 1940s under Sir Leonard Woolley and continued intermittently afterwards; the work uncovered the palace, domestic neighbourhoods and clay tablet finds that linked the site to wider Bronze Age networks. Over time the tell accumulated many occupation layers and has been subject to modern archaeological campaigns and conservation efforts.
The site sits in the Amik Plain of Hatay Province in southern Turkey, near the Syrian border and within the broader region around Antakya. It occupies a prominent archaeological tell visible in the agricultural landscape of the plain.
- Collections: Many of the artefacts recovered during early 20th century excavations are conserved in regional and international museums, with a significant collection displayed in the Hatay Archaeology Museum.
- Access note: Seasonal excavation work has taken place since the 1930s, so access to trenches can be restricted when fieldwork is active.
What to See #
- Royal palace and archives: Excavated palace complex with monumental architecture and mudbrick remains exposed in several trenches; the palace produced the site's cuneiform tablet archive and administrative material.
- City levels and domestic areas: Residential and occupational layers across the tell showing Bronze Age streets, houses and tombs uncovered in different excavation seasons.
Tips for Visiting Alalakh #
- Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid Hatay's intense midday heat and to see the low sun bring out detail on the tell's exposed archaeological layers.
- Combine a site visit with the Hatay Archaeology Museum in Antakya to view many of the finds unearthed at Tell Atchana/Alalakh and get better context before or after walking the ruin.
- Plan logistics in advance: the mound is in a rural area of Hatay Province, so travel by car from Antakya or İskenderun and expect minimal on‑site facilities and potentially limited signage.
Best Time to Visit Alalakh #
Best visited in spring or early autumn when temperatures are comfortable and conditions are good for exploring the archaeological site.
