Alahan Monastery

Alahan Monastery is an early Byzantine monastic complex located in Mersin Province in southern Turkey, notable for its stone churches and monastic buildings. The site dates to the late antique period and is an important example of Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture in the region.

The complex includes multiple churches, monastic rooms, cisterns, and terraces arranged on a steep hillside; visitors typically view the series of buildings and the two principal churches. The preserved stone masonry and carved details are principal highlights.

The monastery was constructed in the late antique period for a monastic community and was used for religious and communal life; it later fell out of use and survived as an archaeological ruin. Conservation and archaeological study have focused on its churches and communal buildings.

Geographically the site sits on a slope in the Taurus foothills of Mersin Province, within the administrative area near the town of Mut, and is accessed by rural roads from the surrounding region.
