How to Get to Al-Khums
Al-Khums (Al Khoms) is a coastal town best reached by road from Tripoli or Misrata; the nearest major airports are Tripoli Mitiga (MJI) and Misrata (MRA). There is no passenger rail service - most visitors arrive by air and continue by taxi, rental car, or intercity minibus along the coastal road.
Tripoli Mitiga Airport (MJI): Mitiga is the main working airport for Tripoli and the closest major airport for reaching Al-Khums. From Mitiga you can take a private taxi directly to Al-Khums (approx. LYD 25-40; about 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic) or rent a car at the airport (daily rates typically start around LYD 25-50 plus fuel; drive time ~1.5-2 hours). Shared transfer services are occasionally available through local operators but are irregular-confirm pickup and price in advance.
Misrata Airport (MRA): Misrata is east of Al-Khums and can be convenient when flights operate there. A private taxi from Misrata Airport to Al-Khums typically costs around LYD 15-30 and takes roughly 1-1.5 hours by road. There are sometimes intercity minibuses and shared taxis from Misrata city toward Al-Khums (fares commonly LYD 3-10), but schedules are informal and can change.
Train: Libya does not have a functioning national passenger rail service, so there are no train options to Al-Khums.
Bus / Shared Taxi (service cars): Intercity buses and shared service taxis run along the coastal corridor between Tripoli, Al-Khums and Misrata. From Tripoli expect a coach or minibus fare in the ballpark of LYD 3-8 and a journey time of about 1.5-2 hours; shared taxis are faster but more expensive (roughly LYD 10-25). Services are informal: departures can be from central bus/minibus parking areas in Tripoli or from roadside collection points, so ask locally or at your hotel for the current pickup spot and timetable.
How to Get Around Al-Khums
Most visitors get around Al-Khums and the coast by road: rental car or private taxi for flexibility, and minibuses or shared taxis for budget travel. If you want to visit Leptis Magna and nearby sites, a hire car or pre-arranged taxi is the most practical option; use minibuses for cheap travel between towns but plan for informal schedules.
- Intercity bus / minibus (LYD 3-8) - Minibuses and coaches connect Al-Khums with Tripoli and Misrata along the coastal highway. They are the cheapest option and can be reliable for day trips, but timetables are informal and vehicles vary in comfort. Buy tickets or confirm departure points locally; expect stops for passengers and luggage which can add to journey time.
- Shared taxis (service cars) (LYD 8-25) - Shared service taxis run frequently between towns on the coast; they leave when full and are faster than minibuses. Fares are higher than buses but still economical; be prepared for a less formal experience (crowded cars, roadside pickups). Negotiate or confirm the price before you depart to avoid surprises.
- Private taxi (LYD 10-40 (typical urban to regional trips)) - Private taxis offer door-to-door convenience and are the easiest way to reach archaeological sites and hotels around Al-Khums. Expect significantly higher fares for long journeys from Tripoli or Misrata; agree a fixed price before you start. Taxis are useful for short intra-city trips when minibuses aren't convenient.
- Car hire / self-drive (LYD 25-60 per day (rental) + fuel) - Hiring a car gives the most flexibility for visiting Leptis Magna and the coastal area - roads between major towns are generally passable but watch for variable surfaces and roadside activity. International driving permits and insurance arrangements vary, so check requirements in advance. Fuel is relatively affordable compared with many countries, but rental daily rates fluctuate with availability and season.
- Local taxi / tuk-tuk (LYD 1-10) - Within Al-Khums local taxis (metered fares are uncommon) and small three-wheelers or private hires handle short hops across town. They are convenient for getting to local markets or the waterfront; always confirm the fare ahead of time. Drivers may expect cash payment only.
- Walking - Al-Khums is compact in many parts and pleasant to explore on foot, especially the old town and the seafront; walking is the best way to access ruins close to the shore and to browse markets. Streets can be hot in summer and shading is limited, so carry water and sun protection.
