Al-Hakim Mosque is a Fatimid-era mosque in historic Cairo, named after the Caliph al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah and located on the medieval al-Muizz Street. It dates to the Fatimid period around the turn of the 11th century and is one of Cairo’s large medieval mosques.
The mosque features a large rectangular prayer hall and courtyard, and its minarets stand above adjacent buildings within the old city. It is part of the ensemble of Fatimid monuments that define much of Cairo’s historic urban core and draws interest for its architecture and urban setting.
Construction began under Fatimid rulers around the late 10th and early 11th centuries and the building served as a congregational mosque and a symbol of Fatimid presence in the city; it has been repaired and restored at various points in its history, most recently in the late 20th century.
The mosque is situated in Islamic Cairo on al-Muizz li-Din Allah Street, within the medieval core north of the Citadel and adjacent to other historic commercial and religious buildings.
- Location on al-Muizz Street: The mosque occupies a prominent position on the medieval main street of Cairo, al-Muizz li-Din Allah Street, within the historic core of the city.
- Restoration: Major conservation and restoration work was carried out in the late 20th century, which substantially repaired and restored the visible structure and minarets.
