Al Bastakiya

Al Bastakiya, also known as the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, is a restored late 19th-century district in Bur Dubai founded by merchants from Bastak in what is now Iran. It is one of Dubai’s most intact historic neighbourhoods, notable for its narrow lanes and traditional wind-tower houses.

The area contains courtyard dwellings, small museums, art galleries and cultural centres that preserve and interpret traditional Gulf urban life. Conservation work in the late 20th century saved many of the original structures and converted them for cultural and commercial use.

Al Bastakiya sits on the western side of Dubai Creek in Bur Dubai, close to historic creekside trading routes and within walking distance of several nearby cultural sites.

• Best times to visit: Best visited in the morning or late afternoon when the narrow lanes have softer light; the area is pedestrian-friendly and frequently used for cultural tours and photography.
