Al Bastakiya
Museum Historic Dubai district featuring traditional wind-tower houses
Al Bastakiya (Al Fahidi) neighbourhood in Dubai preserves wind-tower houses and narrow lanes; visitors explore art galleries, coffeehouses and the nearby Dubai Creek.
Al Bastakiya, also known as the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, is a restored late 19th-century district in Bur Dubai founded by merchants from Bastak in what is now Iran. It is one of Dubai’s most intact historic neighbourhoods, notable for its narrow lanes and traditional wind-tower houses.
The area contains courtyard dwellings, small museums, art galleries and cultural centres that preserve and interpret traditional Gulf urban life. Conservation work in the late 20th century saved many of the original structures and converted them for cultural and commercial use.
Al Bastakiya sits on the western side of Dubai Creek in Bur Dubai, close to historic creekside trading routes and within walking distance of several nearby cultural sites.
- Origins: Founded in the late 19th century by Persian merchants from Bastak, the neighbourhood preserves traditional courtyard houses and wind towers (barjeel).
- Best times to visit: Best visited in the morning or late afternoon when the narrow lanes have softer light; the area is pedestrian-friendly and frequently used for cultural tours and photography.
What to See #
- Wind-tower houses: Traditional wind-tower houses, often two-storey courtyard buildings with characteristic barjeel ventilation towers, form the historic built fabric of the neighbourhood and are the main preserved architectural feature.
- Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding: The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding operates guided cultural programmes and open-meal sessions aimed at visitors seeking context about local customs and Emirati life.
- Art galleries and cultural venues: Several small art galleries and cultural venues such as XVA Gallery are housed within the restored courtyard buildings, supporting a compact visual-arts scene inside the district.
How to Get to Al Bastakiya #
Al Fahidi is in Bur Dubai, just off Dubai Creek. From Al Fahidi Metro Station (Green Line) it is a 10-15 minute walk west along Al Fahidi Street. Abra (water taxi) crossings from Bur Dubai to Deira land close by at the Dubai Creek; the neighbourhood is an easy taxi or short ride-share away from downtown Dubai and the Dubai Museum area.
Tips for Visiting Al Bastakiya #
- Enter the Al Fahidi (Bastakiya) district via the Dubai Museum side to avoid the tourist shops on the eastern edge.
- Look for the narrow wind-tower lanes off Al Fahidi Street-there are small art galleries and tea houses that most guidebooks miss.
- Visit late afternoon: the light in the alleys turns the plaster to burnished gold and the cafes begin to smell of cardamom coffee.
Best Time to Visit Al Bastakiya #
Best visited in Dubai's winter months (November-March) when days are cool enough to stroll and linger.
