Al-Azhar Mosque is a historic mosque and centre of Islamic learning located in the historic core of Cairo. Founded during the Fatimid period around 970-972 CE, the complex later developed into Al-Azhar University, one of the oldest institutions of higher Islamic study.

Architecturally the mosque-complex contains prayer halls, courtyards and multiple minarets and madrasa structures added across the medieval and later periods; its buildings showcase Fatimid foundations with significant Mamluk and Ottoman era additions. The complex remains an active religious and educational institution as well as a focal monument in Islamic Cairo.

Historically Al-Azhar was established under the Fatimid caliphate as both a congregational mosque and a centre for teaching; over the following centuries it evolved into a principal Sunni learning institution and has continued that role into the modern era. The mosque and university reflect continuous development and rebuilding aligned with Cairo’s urban history.

The complex sits in the historic Islamic district of Cairo, within walking distance of other central landmarks in the old city and a short distance from markets such as Khan el-Khalili.

  • Founding: Founded in the Fatimid period around 970-972 CE, it is one of the oldest continuously operating centres of Islamic learning in the world.

Al‑Azhar Mosque sits in Islamic Cairo near Al‑Azhar University and is well served by Cairo’s metro. Take Cairo Metro Line 1 to Al‑Azhar station (or to nearby stations in the Islamic Cairo area) and it’s about a 5-10 minute walk to the mosque from Al‑Azhar station.

From central Cairo (Tahrir Square) a short taxi ride will also reach the mosque within minutes; streets around the mosque are busy and pedestrian access from the nearest metro or bus stops is typically under 10 minutes.

Tips for Visiting Al-Azhar Mosque #

  • Visit outside major prayer times and Friday midday to observe the mosque's historic architecture and courtyard with fewer disturbances from services and student activity.
  • Combine a walk through the surrounding Islamic Cairo streets to see historic madrasas and gates close to Al-Azhar; many visitors miss the adjacent university precinct and its Fatimid-era elements.
  • Check opening arrangements in advance - Al-Azhar functions as a working mosque and university, so entry times for visitors can vary and guided visits during university hours can be more informative.
