Akhaltsikhe Castle

Akhaltsikhe Castle, commonly referred to as the Rabati Castle complex, is a fortified hilltop ensemble overlooking the town of Akhaltsikhe in Samtskhe-Javakheti, Georgia. The complex combines medieval fortress remains with restored buildings and visitor facilities.

The site includes reconstructed merchant buildings, museum spaces, restored religious structures and fortress walls that encircle the hilltop. Much of the visible architecture visitors see today is the result of a major restoration and redevelopment program completed in the early 21st century.

The original fortress dates to the medieval period and the site changed hands between local Georgian rulers and regional powers over many centuries, reflecting Ottoman and Georgian influences at different times. Restoration work in recent decades has focused on consolidating ruins and adapting the complex for public access and exhibitions.

The castle complex sits on a prominent hill in the centre of Akhaltsikhe, overlooking the town and the surrounding valley in southwestern Georgia. It is a focal point of the town and is reached by roads from the regional centre.
