Akanda National Park

Akanda National Park is a protected coastal area in Estuaire Province in northwestern Gabon, located near the capital region. The park conserves mangrove forests, tidal flats, and estuarine channels that form a biologically rich coastal ecosystem.

The site is important for birdlife, including shorebirds and migratory species that use the mudflats and mangroves for feeding and roosting. The park’s aquatic habitats also support fish and invertebrate communities associated with estuarine environments.

Designation as a national park recognizes the ecological value of these coastal wetlands and seeks to regulate development and protect habitat along the estuary. Access is typically by boat from nearby coastal towns and the park is visited for birdwatching and guided nature trips.

Geographically the park lies on the northern side of the Gabon Estuary complex, north of Libreville, and it occupies low-lying coastal terrain dominated by mangroves and tidal channels.
