How to Get to Ak-Jar, At-Bashy#
Ak-Jar (At-Bashy district, Naryn Region) is reached primarily by road from Bishkek or Osh; air service into the immediate area is rare. Overland travel by shared minibus or private transfer is the normal approach for visitors to the highland districts.
Manas / Bishkek (FRU): Bishkek’s Manas International is the main international gateway for most travellers to Kyrgyzstan. From Bishkek you typically continue to Naryn/At-Bashy by road; shared marshrutkas and private transfers are common, and the drive to Naryn province takes several hours.
Naryn / regional airfields (limited): Naryn and some regional towns have small airstrips that occasionally receive charter or seasonal flights. Scheduled domestic air services are limited-check current timetables before planning to rely on air connections to At-Bashy.
Train: There is no direct passenger rail service linking Bishkek with Naryn/At-Bashy; rail lines do not serve this mountainous corridor for regular passenger traffic.
Bus / marshrutka: Shared minibuses (marshrutkas) depart Bishkek’s eastern or southern minibus stations bound for Naryn and towns along the route, typically taking 6-8 hours depending on conditions; fares commonly fall in the hundreds of som range (several USD). Local buses and occasional regional coaches connect smaller settlements-expect basic vehicles and variable schedules.

- Marshrutka (shared minibus) (600-1,200 KGS (approx.)) - Main public option for intercity travel in Kyrgyzstan’s mountain regions. Departures depend on demand; vehicles can be crowded but are the most affordable way to reach At-Bashy/Naryn. Expect long travel times and variable comfort on mountain roads.
- Private taxi / transfer (Negotiated - higher than marshrutka) - Faster and more comfortable than marshrutkas; useful if carrying luggage or travelling as a small group. Good option if you need a flexible schedule in remote areas; agree fare beforehand.
- Domestic flights (limited) (Varies widely) - Some regional airstrips exist but scheduled services are infrequent and seasonal. Confirm availability well in advance if you plan to fly into Naryn or nearby airfields.
- Car hire / self-drive (Depends on vehicle and season) - Possible for experienced drivers; roads in the highlands can be rough and weather-dependent. 4x4 vehicles recommended in winter or for remote tracks; local companies can provide vehicles with drivers (recommended).
- Local taxis & shared rides (Small local fares (negotiated) ) - Within towns like At-Bashy or Naryn, find local taxis for short distances; negotiate fares in som before starting. Shared local rides are common for short hops between villages.
- Walking - Villages and district centres are compact and walkable; walking is the usual way to move around locally, but distances between remote settlements can be long and exposed to weather.
