Best Time to Go: Mid-June to early September when the high pastures are open and yurt camps operate. Outside these months the roads and pastures are often snowbound.

Getting there: Access is by road from Kochkor or Naryn after reaching Bishkek; expect unpaved tracks requiring a 4x4 for the last leg. Most visitors approach by vehicle to a yurt cluster and walk a local circuit from there.

Costs: Modest overall; budget for transport, overnight yurt stays, local guide or horse hire if desired, and simple meals. No special national permit is normally required, though private drivers and yurt hosts charge fees.

Difficulty: High-altitude pasture walking at about 3016 metres with unmarked tracks, soft/boggy ground and strong winds. Main hazards are altitude effects, sudden weather changes and cold nights.

Song-Kol sits in a broad alpine basin of the Tian Shan at around 3016 metres, fringed by low ridges and rolling summer pastures. The landscape is open and big-sky, with grazing horses and seasonal yurts clustered near the lake edge.

There are no mountain huts; accommodation is a mix of simple yurt stays and wild camping. The trek is notable for bringing hikers close to contemporary nomadic life - herders and flocks move through the pastures in summer - and for being achievable in a short, well-paced itinerary.

The nearest international gateway is Bishkek; from there take a shared minibus or bus to Kochkor or Naryn, both of which serve as staging towns for Song-Kol. From Kochkor or Naryn the access road to the lake is unsealed and usually requires a 4x4 vehicle or an organised transfer.

Trailheads are essentially the main yurt camps and vehicle tracks around the lake shores. Most parties arrive by car to a yurt camp and walk a circuit or short out-and-back routes from that base.

The walkable season for Song-Kol is mid-June to early September when snow has melted from the pastures and yurt camps are open. July and August are busiest; if you need a specific yurt or horse service, book ahead in high season.

Expect cold nights, frequent strong winds and possible afternoon storms even in summer; spring and autumn can still carry late snow and impassable roads, so plan accordingly and allow time to acclimatise.
