Ajyad Fortress

Ajyad Fortress was an Ottoman-era hilltop fortress that stood on a ridge overlooking the Grand Mosque in Mecca. It was constructed to control and defend the approaches to the holy enclosure and was a visible landmark on the skyline above the mosque.

The fort comprised defensive walls and towers sited on exposed rock above the mosque complex and served a military and protective function during the Ottoman period. Its exact construction date aligns with Ottoman fortification efforts in the region.

In the early 21st century the fortress was demolished during redevelopment around the Grand Mosque to provide space for new hotel and infrastructure projects, a decision that drew criticism from international heritage bodies and observers.

Geographically the fortress sat on a hill immediately adjacent to the Masjid al-Haram in central Mecca; the location is now occupied by modern development surrounding the mosque.
