Ajina Tepe

Ajina Tepe is a 7th-century Buddhist monastic site in the Khatlon Region of southern Tajikistan, notable for its sculptural remains. The site preserves evidence of Buddhist practice in Central Asia during the early medieval period.

The site contains the remains of shrine buildings, stupas and a large clay reclining Buddha statue together with fragments of painted and modeled sculptures. The excavated remains show the layout of a monastery and examples of Buddhist iconography not common elsewhere in Tajikistan.

Ajina Tepe was occupied in the early medieval period and was excavated in the 20th century by Soviet archaeologists, who documented the sculpture and architectural remains. Finds from the site have informed understanding of Buddhism in Tokharistan and the wider region.

Geographically the site lies in southern Tajikistan near the modern city of Bokhtar (formerly Qurghonteppa) in the Vakhsh basin of Khatlon Region.
