Aït Benhaddou
Historical Site Earthen fortified village and UNESCO caravanserai on Sahara edge
A ksar of earthen buildings along former Saharan caravan routes in Drâa-Tafilalet, Aït Benhaddou is UNESCO-listed and appears in films like Gladiator and Game of Thrones.
Aït Ben Haddou is a fortified ksar on the edge of the High Atlas foothills in southern Morocco, noted for its packed-earth architecture and role on historic trans-Saharan trade routes. The site is a prominent example of pre-Saharan earthen construction and is protected as a World Heritage Site.
The settlement comprises a cluster of earthen buildings, defensive walls and corner towers built of mud brick and rammed earth with narrow streets and communal spaces. The compact village and its silhouette against the surrounding landscape make it a distinctive example of traditional southern Moroccan architecture and urban form.
The ksar developed over several centuries as a roadside fortified settlement used by caravan traffic and local agricultural communities; it later declined in population as caravan trade routes changed but retained its architectural fabric. Conservation and tourism have driven restoration and maintenance in the 20th and 21st centuries.
Aït Ben Haddou stands beside the Ounila River in a semi-arid valley at the southern edge of the High Atlas foothills, within driving distance of the city of Ouarzazate and on routes historically linking Marrakech with the Sahara.
- UNESCO World Heritage listing: Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its outstanding example of southern Moroccan earthen architecture and its state of preservation.
- Film location: The site has served as a film location for numerous international productions due to its well-preserved traditional appearance and dramatic setting.

- If you have time, stay overnight in the nearby guesthouses instead of only doing a day trip from Ouarzazate - an early-morning or dusk visit when tour groups have gone is a very different experience.
