Air and Ténéré Natural Reserves
Nature Reserve Desert reserves protecting Sahelian flora, fauna, dunes
Across the central Sahara, the Air and Ténéré reserves protect desert plateaus, eroded peaks and dune seas; adventurous visitors come for remote desert landscapes, rock art and guided expeditions with local guides.
Air and Ténéré Natural Reserves cover a large, remote area of northeastern Niger that combines the mountainous Air Massif and the adjoining Ténéré desert. The reserves protect dramatic Saharan landscapes, biodiversity and numerous prehistoric archaeological sites.
The Air Massif offers rocky highlands, valleys and isolated oases with archaeological sites and rock art panels, while the Ténéré presents extensive sand seas and dune fields. Travel within the reserves is logistically demanding and most visits are undertaken as guided expeditions across desert tracks.
The reserves were established to conserve both natural and cultural heritage across a vast Saharan territory; the area has a long record of prehistoric occupation visible in rock engravings and archaeological remains. Conservation management has aimed to balance protection of sites with the needs of local communities.
The reserves lie in northeastern Niger within the Agadez Region, well inland from major towns; Agadez is the principal city that serves as a logistical gateway for expeditions into the Air and Ténéré.
- Access and remoteness: Designated and managed to protect both natural landscapes and prehistoric archaeological sites; travel to the reserves is remote and requires planning, local guides and appropriate vehicles.
- Archaeology: Noted for extensive rock art and archaeological evidence of past human occupation in what is now a very arid region.
